13th-Oct-2008 12:59 pm - The National Cover The Velvet Underground
thumbnail: The National Cover The Velvet Underground

The National did a full-on cover of "What Goes On" at New York Magazine's 40th Anniversary Party this past Friday night. Maybe they were inspired by the various forms of "Caroline Says, Pt. II" and other Berlin: Live at St. Ann's Warehouse-related materials floating around these days, the fact that both Matt and Lou do a kind of literary sing-speak, or, perhaps the venue's Exploding Plastic Inevitable-core lighting. More pragmatically, they might've looked at the average age New York Magazine's readership and realized this would go over better than a Be Your Own Pet homage. Here's what goes on at the Hammerstein Ballroom:

13th-Oct-2008 11:54 am - pumpkin cheesecake
I am thinking about making a pumpkin cheesecake using crushed ginger snaps instead of graham crackers as the crust. Have you ever done this before? It sounds like it would be a good pairing, but I don't know if the crunchiness of the cookies will make the crust too hard.

Thanks!
13th-Oct-2008 09:53 am - African Children's Choir Lunch Box

This weekend we were honored to act as a host family for some members of the African Children's Choir while they were in town as part of their U.S. tour. The children are ages 7 to 12 and come from several African nations (our guests were from Uganda). Many of the children have lost their parents to AIDS and other diseases, and all of them come from situations of extreme poverty. They sing and perform to raise awareness of the plight of these children of Africa, and to raise money for relief and education.

Each host family was asked to send their children off today with a packed lunch. Hey, I thought, I can do that!

Since we won't be seeing them again I made improvised bento boxes out of disposable plastic containers and used frozen water bottles as ice packs. Into each lunch box went a homemade pita bread filled with my favorite Wild Garden Hummus and six baked falafel balls. Next to the falafel is a bento-style plastic food cup filled with lemon cucumbers and cherry tomatoes, with a squeezy-fish of dressing and a little food pick. Underneath the cup are some baby carrots you can't see.

I quickly ran out of room in the main container, so I used small side containers for the last strawberries of the season, fresh from Saturday's farmer's market. (I was going to pack some baby bananas, too, but they were all eaten up; they are "like the bananas in Uganda", I was told.)

Verdict:
Well, the Choir is on the way to Spokane now, so I won't really know how they like their lunches, but I hope they do. It was so much fun to meet them, to listen to them singing and playing, and to watch their amazing performance this weekend. (I think they burned like 8 million calories up there!) If the choir is coming to your town next, don't miss it.
13th-Oct-2008 09:56 am - Advances in Modern Technology.
So, three weeks into the school year and I am already completely fed up with technology. I was born in the wrong era. My printer has been on the fritz for the past few weeks...or months, because I was having trouble with it last year, as well. Therefore it has been temporarily retired, until I suck it up and start fiddling with it again. Of course, I'm on a time crunch and have no time whatsoever to actually set aside for the blasted hunk of plastic. As long as I figure something out by Friday. Preferrably before Mom leaves the house. Bah.

The lack of a printer means that I am spending more time in the computer lab. Not a big deal. Except my $50 USB drive did not work with the school computers. So I had to email the crap as an attachment to my school account. Luckily I had learned how to do so last year. Eh.

My T.V. Tuner card thingy was not working for a bit. A few days later I jiggled the cable in a few different places and miraculously it decided to start  working once more. Hmmm.

I"m seriously considering giving up and perhaps researching a Mac. Maybe I need a fresh start with something completely unlike any computer I've ever had the misfortune of touching. They are pretty. And, knowing me, that is clearly reason enough. The only problem is my tuner. That was a HUGE factor in my purchasing of a computer. Far as I know, Mac doesn't have this, or it is ridiculously overpriced. I may just wait until I have had my HP for a few years and then buy a new one. You know, when people start commenting on the antiquity of it. Plus I don't technically have a couple thousand dollars to just throw around, especially when I've only had my computer for a couple of years.

My suitemate Rachel just got (another) new computer. I guess she dropped her computer (a few times from my understanding) and it broke, just shy of a million pieces. She got a Mac. It's purdddyyy.
13th-Oct-2008 06:06 pm - Pumpkin issues
I've got a hankerin' for some pumpkin soup, which normally would be no problem around this time of year. However, I am currently in Berlin, rather than my native Minnesota, and the almighty pumpkin doesn't seem to get quite as much fall-time adoration here. So, although I've found a very tasty-looking recipe for homemade pumpkin soup, I can't seem to locate a sugar pumpkin. It could be that I just don't know where to look. However, I have seen a lot of "Hokkaidokürbis". I'm completely clueless when it comes to squashes, but comparing the scientific name (Curcurbita maxima) with the list on the English wikipedia page, I think this is a hubbard squash or a buttercup squash (are those just two different names for same plant?). I've never had that before, but can I substitute it for the pumpkin and get pretty much the same taste? Would I need to make any adjustments to the recipe?

Beyond that key problem, I'm a little confused on how I'm supposed to "peel" a pumpkin. Any tricks? Up until now, the only way I've ever cooked raw pumpkin was to cut off the top, remove the seeds, and stick it in the oven until it was mushy and I could just scoop it out with a spoon for use in pumpkin pie. I'm guessing that's not what it expected for this recipe. It also calls for the pumpkin to be cubed, but approximately how big should I make the cubes? (sorry for the very specific questions, but I'm rather useless in the kitchen unless I have very exact directions!)

Rock Against Republicans was awesome! and guess who were kind enough to come out and say hi!

Pics behind the cut! )
The set was short, four songs long... and there was less than a hundred people there, making for a really intimate and unique experience. Toooooo cool. :)
Feel free to post your "omg I met the band" pics. I'd love to see them!

Awhile ago (I think it was on here) I saw an idea for a gift where you measure out the ingredients for a recipe in a jar and give it to people. Anyone know what I mean?

thumbnail: Andrew Bird Previews New Songs In NYC

Lately, we've been doing quite a bit of Andrew Bird watching. There's the studio version of "Oh No" from the forthcoming Noble Beast, but also a number of live Bird songs (including "Oh No") floating around out there. After Bird's recent show at the Hiro Ballroom in NYC, we can add a couple more tracks to the flock. You've likely heard one before ("Masterswarm"), but there are some Noble Beasts newbies. The person recording these has a good camera/vantage point:

What should I do with 4 large zucchini and 2 bunches of cilantro? Would it make a good salad or a gross salad? What if I turned it into a frittata?

Also, what's in your favorite bean salad?

I went crazy cooking yesterday but forgot to integrate the zucchini into the veg. "chili" I was making. I got cilantro because I like it and will put it into some guacamole, but it's a shame to waste the rest of the bunches.

13th-Oct-2008 10:45 am - M.I.A. Gets Mashed-Up By Diesel, Remixed By Jay-Z
M.I.A. Gets Mashed-Up By Diesel, Remixed By Jay-Z

Last year's Clash-sampling, terror-ific "Paper Planes" found a second life this summer, thanks to Pineapple Express and a bunch of hot rappers. Maya tells Rolling Stone, "The way human beings hear stuff, it's like, suddenly a song sounds better to you because it's been in a movie." Sensing that we've heard enough shitty covers by now, Mad Decent recently declared the track dead. Of course, it is far from dead: Billboard Hot 100 has "Planes" at #9 (with a bullet?) and Kala gets rereleased with six bonus tracks next month. Among them is a remix of "Boyz" featuring Jay-Z. You can download the MP3 here.

And as we mentioned on Saturday, Diesel threw a big international birthday party the other day, where a visibly pregnant Maya (relax, blogosphere) performed live mash-ups with N.E.R.D., Franz Ferdinand, and T.I.

13th-Oct-2008 10:27 am - Joanna Newsom, Environmentalists Sell Us HSBC Accounts

After the ascension of Devendra & Co., when I hear "freak folk" I hear "bank," so even though Joanna distanced herself from that "soulless, mindless, watered-down, image-obsessed, artless stab at John Fahey or Marc Bolan or Karen Dalton or Donovan or Vashti Bunyan," it's not surprising to find The Milk-Eyed Mender's closer "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowry" selling us checking accounts. It's a beautiful song, and the commercial tries to use it to a super emo degree. Still, it's not quite clear how this will get me to open an account at HSBC. The basic storyline: Environmentalists are protesting a group of lumberjacks about to chop down some old, big pines; it turns out one of the protesters "knows" one of the guys with one of the chainsaws. The final tagline: "We recognize how people value things differently. So what we learn from one customer helps us better serve another." You'll see.

of Montreal @ Roseland Ballroom, NYC 10/10/08

We'd given fair warning about of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping stage setup, but we weren't prepared for all the stops they pulled out for their show this past Friday at Roseland, NYC. Like, for instance: By now you may have heard that Kevin Barnes sang "St. Exquisite's Confessions" while sitting on and stroking a white horse. Understandably, the place lost it. (We have photos to prove it.) While up there on his steed, Barnes said "New York City, of Montreal has arrived!" That said, no other city should expect the horse, it's not on their rider -- this was a NYC-only treat.

13th-Oct-2008 10:02 am - Baked Chicken
I am looking to learn how to make chicken that doesn't use Shake and Bake, because I am trying to eat healthier. My big problem is that I don't know how to make anything besides S&B.

How would I bake boneless chicken, without it being bland. What else would you put in the pan?

Sorry I'm such a cooking n00b. Thanks in advance for any help.

13th-Oct-2008 03:18 am - Shelves?
There's these shelves that I've fallen in love with. I've never seen them in real life, but they were in the background of the picture on the box for a lamp that I saw today in Linens 'n Things (if you followed that). They were like, little squares that you could put in a bunch of different formations, and I want them. Haha.
If anyone knows where they could be found, a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Also, If anyone knows of shelves that are just altogether really adorable, but sophisticated at the same time, I would really like to hear about them. I have absolutely no shelves at the moment, and I need space!

Thank you!

OH MAN. Forgot to mention how crazy that new South Park episode was. My mum and I watched it together and we both laughed our asses off at the Indy rape scenes. FAMILY BONDING!

Now I'm pretty glad I didn't see the most recent Indy movie, haha.

Is it bad that I actually recognized one of the Indy rape scenes from the movie The Accused? XD I was so bored this summer I ended up watching LIFETIME movies.

And I love how it all made a statement about the war at the end. Man, South Park is totally starting to redeem itself. If they do anything on the recent election I hope it's hilarious.

I don't know if you guys know, but Rainn Wilson will be a guest programmer on TCM this Tuesday, October the 14th, beginning at 8 pm ET.

He's chosen four movies to show on TCM:
High School Confidential (1958)
The Gene Krupa Story (1959)
Singin' in the Rain (1952), and
The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953)

I'm pretty interested to see some of these movies and why he chose them. I also love that one of the movies he picked is Singin' in the Rain! :)
